Welcome from the President

Business

It is my distinct honor to welcome you to the Alabama Vocal Association website.  The stated mission of the Alabama Vocal Association is to provide a variety of educational experiences for students that will encourage their lifetime appreciation of and participation in the art of choral music.  Our purposes include promoting cooperation among choral directors, enhancing the programs of vocal music in the schools, providing a means for professional ideas and methods to be shared, and promoting growth and higher standards in music education throughout the state.

As President, it is my goal to keep this mission in the forefront as together we move forward.  Our service to the students of Alabama should be the moving force behind everything we do.  We strive to offer our students the richest possible choral music education so that their lives are forever positively influenced.  It is our hope that every student in the state who desires a choral music education is afforded the opportunity.

As a board, we are committed to serving the choral directors by offering growth opportunities and providing positive encouragement for the individual school choral programs.  As the economic base becomes more uncertain and programs are in jeopardy, we are continuing and expanding our advocacy focus.  The Presidential Council for Arts Advocacy is designed to help keep the vocal arts programs in Alabama strong and alive, as well as give guidance to beginning music educators. Serving on this council are past-presidents of AVA who have a wealth of experience, knowledge and encouragement and they stand ready to help in any way that they possibly can.

AVA offers many opportunities for growth throughout the school year.  Fall Workshop is an in-service opportunity the weekend following Labor Day.  Fall Workshop features All-State reading sessions, well-known session presenters, new teacher luncheon with the AVA board, time to renew old friendships and make new friends.  The Alabama Music Educators Association (AMEA) In-service Conference is held each January in Montgomery.  The conference offers opportunity for musical growth and refueling through dynamic session offerings by nationally known educators as well as the All-state Show Choir Festival.  The Alabama Honor Choir is a part of the conference in even numbered years.  The AVA calendar gives dates and registration information for both conferences.  The All-State Choral Festival also offers teachers an opportunity for growth and fellowship.  Nationally renowned clinicians come together to work with our students and teachers are encouraged to observe the master teaching of these clinicians.

The Alabama Vocal Association Governing Board stands ready to serve you.  We encourage you to involve your students in all AVA events.  We also encourage you to communicate through your district chair anything you feel needs board attention.

We wish for you a great year in choral music!
